Strength Training Is One of the Best Things You Can Do for Your Joints
The idea that lifting wears your joints out has it backwards. Here is how loading tissue actually makes it more robust.

"I stopped lifting because I was worried about my knees."
I hear versions of this every week, and it is one of the most costly pieces of received wisdom going, because the thing being avoided is usually the thing that would have helped.
Tissue adapts to what you ask of it
Muscle, tendon, bone and cartilage are all living tissue, and living tissue responds to demand. Ask more of it, progressively and with enough recovery, and it becomes more capable. Ask nothing of it and it quietly becomes less capable. That is not a moral point about discipline; it is just how biology works.
Bone responds to load. Tendon gets stiffer and more resilient when it is loaded in ways that challenge it. Cartilage relies on movement and compression cycles to exchange nutrients, because it has no blood supply of its own. Joints, generally speaking, do better with use than with protection.
The "wear and tear" framing is doing damage
Joints get described like car tyres, a fixed amount of tread, and every mile uses some up. It is a bad analogy, because tyres cannot repair themselves and you can.
It also does real harm. If you believe movement is spending a finite resource, the sensible response is to move less, and moving less is what actually reduces your capacity. That is a loop I spend a lot of time helping people out of.
What people see on a scan matters much less than most expect, too. Changes that sound alarming in a report are extremely common in people with no pain at all. A scan describes structure; it does not describe what you are capable of.
What actually causes trouble
Not load, but change in load, doing considerably more than your tissue is currently prepared for, too quickly. A sudden jump in volume, a new movement taken heavy on day one, or returning after a long break at the weight you left off at.
The fix is not avoidance. It is a sensible rate of change.
What this looks like in practice
- Progress gradually. Small, boring increases beat heroic jumps.
- Train through full range where you can, rather than defaulting to short, cautious ranges.
- Let hard days be followed by easier ones. Adaptation happens during recovery.
- Expect some discomfort with unfamiliar work; treat sharp, escalating or one-sided pain differently.
- Keep going long-term. Capacity is rented, not owned.
Strong is not the opposite of careful. Loading tissue deliberately is one of the more careful things you can do for it.
Where a physical therapist helps
If you are working around an existing problem, coming back from an injury, or you have been told to avoid something and never told when you could stop avoiding it, that is worth a conversation. Usually the answer is not "stop", it is "here is how to load this so it gets better", and it is much easier to give that answer once somebody has actually watched you move.
